Giving Tuesday

Written by Stefanie Harris, President and Founder of One World Tuition.
Today is Giving Tuesday! A day of giving back because we have been blessed with so much.

Our campaign this year is called #GivingEducation. We asked some of our friends and followers to submit fun facts about the world we live. It's important to remember that none of us are done learning. No matter who you are or where you are in the world there is something to learn. During this month we are working to raise $2000 to help support our students. We are well on the way to meeting our goal. If you would like to contribute you can do so but donating to one of our students, to our operating costs or by purchasing something in our store. All of these things will help us reach our goal!

Crying over cutting onions? Tired of wearing goggles in the kitchen? Fun fact... Toss that onion in the refrigerator instead of leaving it on the counter top, the cool air suppresses the chemicals in the onion that gets us all teared up.

Ninety miles southeast of Washington DC and 12 miles off Virginia's Eastern Shore, Tangier Island is a remote sliver of marsh grasses, tidal creeks and bird filled wetlands that's home to 460 people adrift in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. For the past few hundred years, the only way on and off the island has been by infrequent boat service.

Stand up paddle boarding has existed in some form or another for thousands of years. South American and African cultures used boards, canoes, and other handmade watercraft along with a long stick to propel themselves to travel, fish or ride waves for recreation.

Do you know that "Kente" came about as a result of a spider repairing its web after a bird that was caught in it and managed to escape? This experience which was observed by a hunter more than 400 years ago, now serves as the traditional festival celebrated every September by the people of Kpetoe. Weaving of the fabric, does not only represent history but also the only source of employment for the locals.

The Kennebec River in Maine, runs past the shipbuilding center of Bath, then to the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean tides affect the river height as far north as Waterville. This English Popham Colony was founded on the beach pictured here in 1607. The settlers built the Virginia of Sagadahoc, the first oceangoing vessel built in the New World by English speaking shipwrights. Hundreds of wooden and steel vessels have since been launched on the Kennebec.

What is the most expensive coffee in the world in 2018? It's made by elephants, literally. The Black Ivory Coffee Coompany in Thailand fees elephants with Arabica beans. The excreted beans (yes, the beans in their poop) are then roasted and processed into coffee.

Pelicans can spot a fish swimming under water from 60 feet in the air. Once it's prey has been spotted, they dive into the ocean bill first. When they collide with the prey, the impact stuns the victim enough that they can scoop it up.

Fall, in the northeast, you can find a fuzzy caterpillar called the Banded Woolly Bear. This is the larvae of the Isabella moth. It is said that the bands of the Woolly Bear can forecast how severe the winter will be. If the black bands are wide, the winter will be mild. If narrow, the winter will be severe. As you can see, we are in for a bad one!
